“As I became more successful as a person and in my profession, my past seemed to travel farther and farther into the distance. I tried my best forget it. It was like I truly had lived two separate and distinct lives, and Part I was slowly fading away. But I also couldn’t deny that my early years were an integral part of who I was, and as I grew older, I realized I didn’t want to lose that part of me. There were things I regretted, but I’d also had quite an unusual upbringing and some amazing adventures as a young man, and perhaps the story of how I kicked drugs could inspire someone else to do the same. So, in an effort to better understand and integrate these two phases of my life, and as a way to finally answer my daughters’ questions about who I really was, I decided to write a memoir.”
